The Best Albums of 2017

And there goes 2017 (almost!) and so I guess we should have a round up of some of the years best albums...in my humble opinion!

Mr Jukes - God First

This album was startling and I'd argue it is probably my favourite of 2017. Jack Steadman (Bombay Bicycle Club) went solo and made this absolutely bombasticl, positive and uplifting album of funk, soul and hip hop anthems. It is phenomenal and EVERYONE needs to listen to it.

Kendrick Lamar - Dam

Good ol' Kendrick, releasing yet another huge hip-hop staple for me to get my teeth into. His fourth album to date and another piece of musical and story telling genius. For me he is still head and shoulders above most current hip-hop artists out there and, Damn, just further cemented that fact.

LCD Soundsystem - American Dream

To use the title of the opening track on American Dream, (LCD Soundsystem's fourth album)...Oh Baby! What a gorgeous, triumphant and emotive return this is (Lead singer James Murphy ended it all in 2011) is! The electro-punk sounds of samples, beeps and beats create the back drop to the stories of broken friendships, remorse, and loss and is as good a come back as could have been anticipated.

Gorillaz - Humanz

Coming back with their fifth album, Gorillaz packed in the stars and celeb collaborations to the rafters and made an album of both dark shades and bright episodes for, Humanz. The album is pretty politicially conscious, echoing the hip-hop past of Public Enemy and De La Soul, who, maybe unsurprisingly, happen to feature on Humanz. Where the album might be lacking in strong hooks and riffs, it is pulled back by the sheer beauty of Damon Albarn's songwriting...again...the talented bastard!

Liam Gallagher - As you were

For every Oasis fan out there and a few who might be on the peripheries. Solid songwriting, nice melodies and chances to sing through your nose and bring out the "Son-shiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnneeeee". I wrote a longer review here.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Who Built The Moon?

An experiemental outing for Noel Gallagher here. Not ground breaking but interesting none the less. Longer review also here.

Pete Tong - Ibiza Classics

I love me some dance music and when you combine that with the beauty of an orchestra you've got me! Following on from his MONUMNETAL, Classic House album, with The Heritage Orchestra, he released the 'almost as good' Ibiza Classics. Same rules apply - Classic dance tunes played with that big ol' mother fucking orchestra to make you euphorically chilled. It's a work of beauty.

Some of you may be thinking, how come he didn't include Sampha? Well...I just...I didn't really dig it! Sorry!

Here's to many more great albums in 2018 though!
